St Nicholas School Prayer
Loving Father,
St Nicholas was an example of friendship and love.
Help us to be like him;
faithful to you,
willing to serve others and generous to those in need.
Fill our hearts with joy so that all may see your light shining in our school.
Through Christ our Lord.

‘Whenever two or three are gathered in my name, there am I among them.’                                                                                                                        Matthew 18: 20

Prayer is the centre of our life here at St Nicholas, and children have the opportunity to pray daily with their class at the beginning of the day, before lunch and at the end of the day.

Throughout the year, our school community gathers to celebrate liturgy and to pray.  We gather together to celebrate the main feasts of the Church year; each liturgy is led by a different class to enable children across the school to participate fully.  Our liturgies are engaging and lively, using  a range of songs, signing, prayers, animation, IT, drama, poetry and art to facilitate reflection on and engagement with the Gospel message.  We warmly invite you to come and worship with us.  Our whole school liturgies happen at 9:15 in the morning; please see our school calendar for the dates and feasts.

A core group of staff meet weekly to pray for the needs of our school community.  If you have any special intentions you would like us to pray for, please email Maria Quinn, our school and parish chaplain on or place your intention in the prayer box located in the school reception.

Mustard Seeds

There was a man who took a tiny mustard seed,’ Jesus said, ‘and planted it in his field.  It was so small it was like a speck of dust.  But the little seed grew.
Soon it was a strong plant.  It grew and grew til it was like a great tree.  The birds built their nests in its branches.
God’s Kingdom is like that–growing and growing.’
-Matthew 13 (The Lion’s Children Bible)
‘Mustard Seeds’ is our friendly Christian outreach club which encourages our school community to be disciples of Jesus. ‘Mustard Seeds’ children spend time praying together, organising and facilitating whole school fund-raising activities for the poor, working on projects which brings the Good News of Jesus  to others and which raises awareness of important moral and ethical issues.
Recent ‘Mustard Seeds’ projects have included:
  • organising food donations for the Exeter homeless
  • selling lunch-time drinks in aid of ‘Water-Aid’
  • supporting CAFOD through purchasing Christmas ‘world gifts’
  • Christmas caroling at Tesco’s with our local parish CAFOD groups
  • making ‘get well’ cards to be distributed in local hospitals and nursing homes by the SVP (St Vincent de Paul Society)
  • creating a travelling  ‘Peace Prayer’ book to facilitate classroom prayer
  • supervising a Fair-trade tuck shop during Fair-trade Fortnight
The club is run by Maria Quinn, our school and parish chaplain, and meets every Wednesday from 12:30-1:15 in the D&T room.
Children across Years 3-6 are welcome to come to the club on a weekly basis; the club operates an ‘open doors’ policy which means there is no pressure to attend every week. An announcement each week explains what ‘Mustard Seeds’ will be doing and children are warmly welcome to attend.
