The Trust, Local CAST Board and the Headteacher of a VA school must ensure that RE is provided as part of a school’s basic curriculum.
At St Nicholas Catholic Primary School our curriculum is designed in accordance with the teachings, doctrines, discipline and gerneral and particular norms of the Catholic Church.
Pupils at St Nicholas are required by law to take part in an act of collective worship on each school day which must be in accordance with the provisions of the school’s trust deeds and instrument of governance.
The right of withdrawal from RE / collective worship
Parents are permitted to request the withdrawal of their child from receiving part or all of RE / collective worship. If a child is withdrawn the school has a responsibility to supervise them, not to provide additional teaching or incur extra costs.
Religious education is integrated into the curriculum at St Nicholas. It should be noted that there is no right for withdrawal from other areas of the curriculum where spontaneous questions raised by pupils may occur.
The RE curriculum at St Nicholas is set by the Bishops of England and Wales. It requires the teaching of other religions as well as Catholicism.
If you wish to withdraw your child please contact school and arrange a meeting. We will need to understand the basis for the request to avoid any misunderstanding. We can then discuss the implication of any withdrawal and circumstances in which withdrawal would be reasonable
